Early Life and Background

Vanessa Marie Bryant (née Urbieta Cornejo) was born on May 5, 1982, in Los Angeles, California. She is of Mexican descent. Her parents divorced when she was a baby, and her father moved to Baja California. Her mother, Sofia Urbieta, worked as a shipping clerk at an electronics company and later married Stephen Laine in 1990. Vanessa adopted her stepfather's surname, becoming Vanessa Laine, although she was never formally adopted. She has an older sister named Sophie. The family resided in Garden Grove, California, and Vanessa attended Marina High School in Huntington Beach. 

Entry into the Entertainment Industry

In August 1999, at the age of 17, Vanessa and her friend attended a hip-hop concert at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre. They were approached by a company offering work as music video extras and backup dancers. Vanessa subsequently appeared in music videos for artists such as Krayzie Bone and Snoop Dogg. In November 1999, while working as a background dancer for the music video "G'd Up" by Tha Eastsidaz, she met Kobe Bryant, who was pursuing a rap career at the time. ​

Marriage and Family Life

Vanessa and Kobe Bryant's relationship progressed rapidly. They became engaged in May 2000, shortly after Vanessa's 18th birthday, and married on April 18, 2001, at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Dana Point, California. The couple had four daughters: Natalia Diamante (born 2003), Gianna Maria-Onore (born 2006), Bianka Bella (born 2016), and Capri Kobe (born 2019). Tragically, Kobe and Gianna died in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020. ​

In 2007, Vanessa and Kobe founded the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Foundation, aimed at providing scholarships to minority college students worldwide. Following the deaths of Kobe and Gianna, Vanessa rebranded the Mamba Sports Foundation to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation in their honor, focusing on supporting young athletes in need. She also launched the Mambacita clothing line in May 2021, with all proceeds benefiting the foundation. Additionally, Vanessa serves as the President and CEO of Granity Studios, a multimedia company Kobe established to produce content that combines sports and storytelling. ​

After the tragic helicopter crash, Vanessa filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles County for invasion of privacy and negligence, as first responders had taken and shared unauthorized photos of the crash site. In August 2022, she was awarded $16 million in damages, and in February 2023, the county agreed to a settlement totaling $28.85 million. Vanessa pledged to donate the proceeds to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation. ​

Public Appearances and Legacy

Vanessa continues to honor Kobe and Gianna's legacy through various public appearances and initiatives. In July 2024, she and her daughters attended the WNBA All-Star Game in Phoenix, sitting courtside and engaging with players like Caitlin Clark. Vanessa shared moments from the event on social media, highlighting her ongoing support for women's basketball and youth sports.
